JOUR ET NUIT

25 x 38 inches
gouache on translucent yupo
JOUR ET NUIT was inspired by my love of magritte—his playful use of light and shadow. i’ve always loved his work, in part because i have always loved strolling through a neighborhood at dusk, the color changes in the sky as the world settles into night and the lights that illuminate homes. to me it’s a very cozy feeling and always has been—the completion of another day. the piece speaks to a sense of gratitude for the day-to-day, seemingly mundane rhythems of our life, the commonplace things that make our lives so beautiful. the title was inspired by some wanderings around paris at dusk and seeing a sign that read “jour et nuit” (actually about parking!) that made me think of how much i love all the moments of my life. this is a piece that exudes a peaceful, contented calm and a sense of gratitude for the everyday.
